Trump: California Governor “Defying Voters” Over Suspension Of Executions

(Sacramento, CA) — President Trump is slamming California Governor Gavin Newsom’s decision to suspend executions in the state. On Twitter this morning, Trump said Newsom “is defying voters” as the governor is giving a reprieve to all 737 inmates on death row. The President added “friends and families of the always forgotten victims aren’t thrilled and neither am I.” Newsom is expected to make it official later today with an executive order that decries the death penalty as inconsistent with the state’ bedrock values. The last time California executed an inmate was in 2006 and has only executed 13 people since 1978. Voters have narrowly defeated efforts to end the death penalty. The reprieves will remain in effect until Newsom leaves office.
