Bakersfield firefighters are investigating what caused a detached garage to go up in flames down the street from Jefferson Elementary School.

Neighbors heard an explosion before the fire started around 10:00 Tuesday morning, and Battalion Chief John Frando says the wood roof and overgrown bushes helped it spread.

The woman who was living in the garage was not home at the time.
