BAKERSFIELD, CA (KUZZ) — A Kern County judge has overturned the verdict in the lawsuit of a former Bakersfield Fire Department fire captain.
The judge ruled Friday a jury was wrong when it concluded the city of Bakersfield discriminated against Edgar Sloan on the basis of race and religion.
Sloan brought the case in 2020, claiming his bosses at the fire department harassed him and passed him over for promotion because he was black and a member of the Jehovah’s Witnesses.
The ruling said the jury found the city hadn’t engaged in any acts of discrimination.
Last November, the jury granted Sloan $700,000.
