BAKERSFIELD, CA (KUZZ) — A preliminary hearing has been postponed until April 15, 2026, for a woman accused of striking a young boy who was crossing the street in central Bakersfield.
Judith Deval, 41, has pleaded not guilty to charges of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence after her car allegedly struck and killed Ricardo Aguilar, 8, at the intersection of Bank Street and Holtby Road in October 2024.
Authorities say Deval was talking to her aunt on her cellphone when she hit the child.
Using a cellphone behind the wheel of a vehicle has been illegal in California since 2008.
