BAKERSFIELD, CA (KUZZ) — The Bakersfield City Council has given initial approval to a proposed ordinance that would regulate short-term rentals like Airbnb and Vrbo in the city.
Right now, short-term vacation rentals are banned in Bakersfield even though city officials estimate about 500 properties are already operating.
The proposed ordinance, considered at Wednesday night’s council meeting, would legalize and regulate those rentals through new rules and a new permit system.
Under the proposal, property owners would need a city permit to operate, and then, for only 12 months.
