CALIFORNIA CITY, CA (KUZZ) — Hundreds of protesters gathered Tuesday night as the California City Planning Commission upheld approval for the state’s largest immigration detention center.
After a hearing lasting more than five hours, commissioners voted 2-to-1 to deny an appeal from a group called the Dignity Not Detention Coalition, allowing Core Civic’s site plan approval to stand.
The 2500-bed facility on Virginia Avenue has come under fire for alleged human rights violations, medical neglect, lack of valid operating permits, and illegal retaliation against detainees.
The center was recently sold to the US Department of Homeland Security, but Core Civic will maintain daily management under its existing contracts with Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
