BAKERSFIELD, CA (KUZZ) — Extreme summer heat has devastated Kern County’s pistachio crop, with growers facing an estimated 56% production loss.
The county has declared an agricultural disaster, citing more than $350 million in losses.
Officials say the declaration could help bring resources to farmers and prepare for future climate impacts.
Pistachios are among Kern County’s top agricultural crops, generating more than $1 billion in value in some years.
