Convicted Murderer Accused of Attacking Officers, Inmate at Kern Valley State Prison

DELANO, CA (KUZZ) — A convicted murderer is accused of attacking two correctional officers and another inmate Thursday at Kern Valley State Prison in Delano.

Prison officials say Derrick Smith, 59. charged at officers with an improvised weapon, striking one officer before attacking another inmate.

Officers used a 40-millimeter impact round to subdue Smith.

The two officers and the inmate were treated for their injuries and released. Smith is expected to face attempted homicide charges in connection with the attack.
