BAKERSFIELD, CA (KUZZ) — Bakersfield city leaders considered whether to pursue a sanctuary city policy following a packed and often heated City Council meeting August 5.
A sanctuary city is a municipality with local policies that limit cooperation with federal immigration enforcement.
During the meeting, dozens of residents spoke against the proposal, arguing it could weaken local law enforcement efforts and leave Bakersfield residents without adequate protection.
KUZZ News reported that the idea would be reviewed by the city’s Laws and Legislation Committee before any recommendation returns to the full City Council.
However, an email to KUZZ News from Public Information Officer Joe Conroy states, “Council gave direction to staff that there would be no further follow-up on the Sanctuary City topic. It is not expected to come back to any future Council or committee meetings at this time.”
The U.S. Department of Justice reports there are only a handful of cities around the country that are designated “sanctuary cities,” including Los Angeles, Chicago, New Orleans and Portland.
