BAKERSFIELD, CA (KUZZ) — Kern County will mark the 25th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks Friday with a series of memorials and events honoring the nearly 3,000 people who were killed.
The annual 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb will take place at the Bank of America building from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. First responders participating in the climb will begin at 6:30 a.m.
A Bakersfield Fire and Police memorial ceremony is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. at Fire Station 15 on Buena Vista Road.
An annual hero appreciation lunch will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at SSD Alarm offices on Fruitvale Avenue. Free barbecue will be served to local first responders.
A second Fire and Police ceremony will begin at 7:30 p.m. at Station 15. The ceremony will honor 27 local military members who died in the wars that followed the September 11 attacks.
Student memorials will also be held at Bakersfield High School, South High School and C-TECH.
A total of 2,977 people were killed in the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
